Clean-up Jasper County

The Jasper County Commissioners, in an effort to beautify our county, voted last month to waive landfill fees for residents for the entire month of April.

Advanced Disposal joined in the effort, and has donated bags, gloves and vets so people who want to pick up trash along the roadways can do so safely and it not cost them anything but time.

The city of Monticello is doing its annual clean-up also in April. On April 30, items placed on the curb will be picked up by Advanced Disposal.

The county has advertised its effort, as has the Chamber of Commerce. I hope everyone is doing his or her part to help beautify our community.

A flyer created by the COC suggests that we each pick up a piece of litter each day. Throw trash in a trash can. Keep truckloads covered. Be an example by not littering, and take a re-usable bag to the store with you.

In addition, it suggests you join your friends in area clean-ups.

The state used to have an adopt a highway program, and families, clubs, organizations would select a mile of road to adopt and pick up litter. I don’t know if it is still in place. But, wouldn’t it be great if all our local businesses and civic organizations pitched in and each picked up trash along a mile of road. That would be a lot of miles of road.

It takes so little to keep the county clean; it’s a shame so many people don’t care and use roadways as dumping ground.

Let’s all pitch in and show our appreciation for the beautiful county in which we live and pick up litter along the road, clean-up our yards and do our part to beautify Jasper County.
