Marching Canes Visit New Orleans

Over Spring Break 51 members of the Marching Hurricanes visited the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans. After leaving school at 5 a.m., the band arrived in the Crescent City and packed in many once in a lifetime experiences in three days.
They stayed busy during their trip and had amazing experiences including: several guided walking tours of the French Quarter where they learned about the history of the city; a visit to the National World War II Museum including the 4D movie experience: a dinner cruise on the Mississippi River on the Steamboat Natchez; a swamp boat tour where they got an up close view of alligators and even got to hold baby alligators (be sure to ask a band member about the marshmallow fight in the swamp!); a tour or Mardi Gras world where many of the floats used in parades are constructed and stored and then had the opportunity to make their own Mardi Gras masks.
Other highlights of the trip included a private concert at the famous Preservation Hall where they had the opportunity to hear incredible jazz musicians play in an intimate setting and then were able to ask them questions. The Marching Hurricanes also gave their own performance on the banks of the Mississippi with the Steamboat Natchez as their backdrop.
Band director Chris Savage echoed the sentiments of the students when he said, “thank you to all chaperones who went on the trip to make it an incredible experience for the students! “
He also encourages everyone to make plans to attend the third bi-annual Kaleidoscope Concert this Saturday, April 23, at 4 and 7 p.m. This non-stop concert will feature nearly 200 Jasper County students from kindergarten through high school performing in over 20 different musical acts!
Tickets will be sold at the door for $7.
