Memorial Day
Whew! How time flies when you are having fun. Right students? Well, let the fun begin for your summer vacation, no books, no school buses, no homework, just hanging with friends and enjoying life. Ah, some of us older crowd remembers those lazy daze of summer and how quickly they flew by.
Some of us were lucky enough to attend summer camp, learn how to make a handy lanyard with some plastic yarn, have races in the pool and dive in the cool water again and again. Marco Polo, Marco Polo.
Our days were spent laying in the backyard and sometimes beside a lake or swimming pool soaking up the rays. Little did we know that years later as a result of those rays we would have regular visits with someone called a dermatologist. You mean to tell me that mixing baby oil and iodine and applying to your youthful skin was not a good idea for getting a tan. Now you tell me.
Summer was for cooking hot dogs on a wooden stick, then later putting a marshmallow on the same stick and letting it catch fire. Can’t you still remember the taste of that burned marshmallow with its liquid center dripping into your mouth? There was always an expert in the crowd who toasted their marshmallow, patiently waiting for it to turn a golden brown. Overachieving perfectionist no doubt.
The unofficial start to summer is Memorial Day, this coming Monday. Take time out of your day to honor those who gave their lives for us so that generation after generation has the privilege to have those lazy daze of summer and those memories.
