Murder Creek

You know the old quote, “You don’t know where you are going if you don’t know where you’ve been” or something to that effect. History tends to repeat itself unless we learn from it and most of the time the learning is pretty painful.

Jasper County has a vivid long history and this Thursday, Feb. 16, Larry Smith of Smithboro community will inform us about a historical event in our county that has become infamous, Murder Creek Church Road, as he speaks at the Thomas Persons Hall. One is reminded of this event when you travel into Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center as several of us did when we missed the road to the lodge where the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner was being held a few weeks ago. And there was the name of the road that stirs a lot of interest around here, “Murder Creek Church Road.”

Mr. Smith, along with gifted photographer, Benny Hawthorne, will tell us all about the road and history and provide pictures. Hope everyone will support this special evening.

Unfortunately, locals sometimes pass quickly by and don’t pay attention to the roadside signs about our history. Stop and read these signs. Others may turn their heads and think what is that all about, but others may stop and join you. And we must take advantage of those in the know in our county. History is fascinating. Our library also has in their collection some books written particularly about our county, check them out.
