Dream Big
Dreamers, Welcome! Why do some lose the ability to dream, to sit and ponder, lie in the grass and see shapes in the clouds? Life becomes real busy and crowded.
As comedian, George Carlin once said when he was young he could carry everything he owned in his pockets, then later he needed a suitcase, then later a car, and then the last time it was a moving van. Thank goodness for the dreamers that are able to transcend all the stuff and visualize and create and not get loaded down.
A writer, a playwright, a lyricist sits down in front of a computer or in some cases even a typewriter and out of their brains come words that flow onto the screen or paper and have never been written before. For sure nowadays, the internet website, www.turnitin.com, can analyse every word and phrase for plagiarism.
Sometimes the writer is innocent as all this stuff that he has accumulated in his brain over the years becomes his own even if it once belonged to someone else.
PBS television host, Tavis Smiley, great speaker by the way, was commencement speaker at the college where he had graduated and he noticed one of his former professors in the audience. In past speeches, Smiley had used this professor’s quotes. He said the first time he used the quote in a speech, he said Professor so and so said, then the next time he used his quote he said a professor I had once said, then the next time he quoted him, he said, someone once said. But the day of reckoning came when the professor was in the audience and he had to own up.
DREAM BIG! Remember our parents told us that we could do anything in life that we set our minds to. I always wondered where did my parents dreams go or were their dreams thwarted by four kids, a mortgage, etc. Since I started writing my mother’s life history many years ago, I know the answer. Both of my parents were products of the real Great Depression when they didn’t think about tomorrow, surviving today was their dream.
Dreamers started this town. In the early 1800s the land was probably acres of pine trees and wildlife, but some dreamers saw a town, a school and businesses. If they stood in the middle of the square today, those dreamers would know that their dream came true.
Listen up Senior Class of 2017 of Jasper County High School and Piedmont Academy. Rapper and actor, LL Cool J, at the age of nine years old dreamed of making a record and hearing himself on the radio. In high school, he and a friend pushed some tables together in the cafeteria and he performed to an audience of his peers. From that day, he knew “This is what I want to do.” DREAM BIG CLASS OF 2017 even if you have to borrow one.
