September Happenings
There’s nothing like good people getting together to enjoy each other’s company, especially in our older years.
In September the Jasper County Senior Center has already gone to Conyers to see the new movie “All Saints,” had ice cream and visited a member in the hospital on the first; will travel to Indian Springs for a picnic and exploration on the eighth; and will have an appreciation— of law enforcement and our county—cookout on the 22nd. The cookout is also a celebration of our Senior Center, as September is Senior Center Month.
The Fall garden has been planted, including cabbage, collards, peas, cucumbers, and sweet potatoes. Crafts are done every Thursday and exercise is a regular activity. All of this works on keeping minds and bodies as healthy as possible.
The center will open up to the public a free Diabetes Management six-week course beginning on the 18th and continuing every Monday from 10 a.m. – noon through October 23rd. A commitment must be made to attend as those with excellent attendance will participate in a graduation ceremony.
The seniors find purpose in giving back every month by cheering up the residents at the Retreat Nursing Home with their “Voices of Angels Choir.” The Site Council are representatives within the older citizens who attend at the Center and they give direction on activities they want on the calendar each month. This makes it a place they all can enjoy with a variety of activities.
They are also planning a huge fund raiser for October 14 from 6:30 to 9:30 called “Seniors on the Runway”. Many of our leaders will be involved and need the community’s support. Cost at the door is $5 and is guaranteed fun for all adults. Funding will go toward improving our outdoor pavilion.
Lastly, Eagle Scouts will be donating time and materials to plant blueberry and fig bushes in the back yard on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are welcome.
For more information, check the senior center out on Facebook or go by the center to join in the fun at 26 Mack Tillman Drive. This is a place where Jasper County ages well.
