Kiwanis Honors Students, Teachers

The Monticello Kiwanis Club, Les Steele, president, (left), honored the students and teachers of the month for Jasper County High School and Piedmont Academy at the regular Kiwanis meeting Monday.

Eli Ewing is Jasper County High School’s Student of the Month, and he chose Michael Cooper as his teacher. A senior at Jasper County High School, Mr. Ewing, is not sure what he wants to do after graduation, but he is applying to the University of Georgia, Mercer University and Kennesaw State University. He plans to study engineering or sports medicine.

Whereever he goes he plans to be a walk-on kicker for the football team. He scored the winning field goal vs. Putnam County to extend the Hurricanes season into the playoffs. He also plays soccer, and is active in Beta Club, and FCA. A dual enrollment student, he only takes AP literature and weight training at the high school He said Mr. Cooper’s class is challenging, but that Mr. Cooper makes it easy and helps the students understand it. He also helps outside of class, said Mr. Ewing, such as with college entrance essays.

Mr. Cooper told stories about when Mr. Ewing became a really important part of the soccer team. He said he’s really smart in math and science, but he struggles in AP English.

Anne Marie Hildebrant is Piedmont Academy’s Student of the Month, and she chose counselor Ashley Cook as her teacher. Miss Hildebrant is a senior at Piedmont Academy, and plans to study nursing at Mercer University, the University of North Georgia or Augusta University, two of which she has already been accepted to. After becoming a nurse and practicing for a time, she plans to concentrate on dermatology, perhaps becoming a nurse practitioner.

She has attended Piedmont since pre-kindergarten, and is vice-president of FFA, and active in the National. Honor Society and Beta Club. She serves as goalie for the soccer team, and is on the shotgun team and plays tennis. She also participates in literary both in solo performance and girls’ trio. She chose Ms. Cook for her teacher because of all the help she has given her through the years, but especially with college applications. She helped calm her nerves, said Miss Hildebrant.

Ms. Cook said that it is easy for Miss Hildebrant to sell herself because she is so active in school, and holds leadership roles in so many areas. And, she keeps up with her grades while doing everything else.

The next meeting of the Monticello Kiwanis Club will be Monday, Dec. 11, and it is a business meeting. All members are urged to attend. The Monticello Kiwanis Club normally meets the second and fourth Monday each month at noon at Monticello First United Methodist Church. There will be only one meeting in December as the date for the second meeting is Christmas.
