The Olympics

Every four years we hear the famous Olympic Fanfare, da-DA-da-da-da-DA-da, and know we are going to see one of those WOW moments.

This year, predicted to be the coldest, the Olympics are in Pyeongchang, pronounced pong-ta, Korea.

Regardless of your knowledge of curling, skeleton, halfpipe and slope style skiing, slalom, and this one has to be the scariest event, the luge, we sit transfixed in front of the tv as if we know what they are doing. Yes, the luge where a person dressed in a skin tight jumpsuit jumps on top of a sled, laying face up and then tries to maneuver around a course covered in ice with speeds as fast as you can go.

By far ice skating has the largest audience. Do you know your camel spin from a triple axle or a quad salchow? No need, the combo commentators, the very colorful and vocal Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski are back. Johnny’s costumes are always the talk of the rink.

Opening ceremonies begin at 6 a.m. February 9, and repeated for American Prime time audiences at 8 p.m. Just think it is already tomorrow in Pyeongchang.

For just a couple of weeks the world comes together with rarely any problems, hopefully on an even playing field, to compete and share what is known as the Olympic Spirit.

Let the games begin.
