History Is A Great Teacher

History is a great teacher. Someone once said you don’t know how far you’ve come unless you know where you’ve been.

A hundred years ago, 1918, President Wilson gave his 14-point speech, essentially telling the rest of the world how to run itself. He had campaigned on keeping us out of war. 1918 saw our Doughboys going off to World War I.

Babe Ruth would be traded to the New York Yankees by the Boston Red Sox after winning the 1918 World Series. Thus, would begin the “Curse of the Bambino” which many believe caused Boston to have to wait 86 years to win another World Series.

Millions around the world would die from the influenza epidemic. Atlanta would close down schools and theaters and if you attended the state fair you had to wear a mask.

Rolling blackouts after lack of rain caused hydro electric dams to stop working. Georgia Governor took over coal distribution after a fuel shortage occurred during the coldest winter in “recorded” history. And to add to the misery, Georgia legislature ratified the 18th Amendment that banned liquor sales.

On a high note, women’s hemlines went up.
