Chris Bridges Wins Writing Award
Monticello native Chris Bridges was recently recognized by the Georgia Press Association during the group’s annual Better Newspaper Contest awards banquet.
Mr. Bridges won second place for Best Sports Column for his work submitted to the Barrow News-Journal in Winder. The columns were written during the 2018 calendar year.
The three columns which comprised the winning entry focused on Mr. Bridges covering high school football for three decades, the death of long-time high school football coach Tommy Stringer and how underdogs make the NCAA basketball tournament fun to watch.
The Barrow News-Journal’s sports section also won first place in its division. Bridges contributed columns and articles for the winning entry.
“It is always an honor to be recognized by your peers,” Mr. Bridges said. “I have had a lifetime passion for sports and enjoy relating my thoughts and experiences to readers each week.”
Mr. Bridges has contributed sports articles about Piedmont Academy to The Monticello News since 1988. He also writes a weekly column titled “Plain Speaking” for the paper. Since spring he also helped cover Monticello High School athletics.
He is the son of Paul and Melba Bridges of Monticello
