How to Increase Efficiency in Woodworking

Steer Clear of Drywall Screws
One of the worst things woodworkers can use in their projects is drywall screws. They’re called “drywall screws” for a reason. Drywall screws without pilot holes tend to split the wood, since the threading isn’t designed for the coarseness of wood.
Use Machine-Carving
There are many advantages of machine-carving over hand-carving. One of the major benefits, obviously, is speed. Machine-carving makes the process much faster, which means you’ll move products through the cycle more efficiently. Another benefit woodworkers often overlooked is reproductions. Computer numerical control (CNC) machines are able to recreate pieces with impeccable accuracy using 3D software.
Use Sanding Blocks
Sure, electric sanders are available, but they make it difficult to be consistent and sand with the intended amount of pressure. Using old-fashioned sanding blocks is still best. Besides better accuracy, an additional benefit is that these are much more cost-effective than electric sanders.
Keep Blades Sharp or Rotate Old Blades
With all the cutting you’re going to do, a major way to increase efficiency in woodworking is to always use sharp blades. This will make your cuts more accurate and cleaner, and it’s also much safer. Dull blades run the risk of catching pieces of wood and not cutting through them cleanly, which can make the board or the blade itself slip.
“Measure Twice, Cut One”
The old saying of “measure twice, cut once” stands true. Nothing is more inefficient and wasteful than measuring once, making the cut, and later realizing it’s off by an eighth of an inch. You can’t reattach the wood—not cleanly, anyway. This results in a waste of raw materials and time, because now you have to go back and re-measure and cut again.
Stay Organized
Last but not least, you need to keep your workshop organized. If workers are unable to easily locate the materials that they need, this will waste time and cause frustration.
The bottom line is, woodworkers enjoy their job, and they work with integrity. It’s critical that they’re able to do their best work.
