A Day in the Life of a Construction Manager

Schedule
A construction manager doesn’t get the standard nine-to-five workday hours. They will realistically be on their job site by the sunrise—if not before. While they have many responsibilities offsite, they need to maintain a presence on their job site for group comradery, management overseeing, and high worker moral. Seeing the construction manager out on the site, talking to and helping their workers with tasks goes a long way to show interest, care, and job dedication.
The manager spends their day back and forth between the office and the job site, juggling multiple responsibilities. The days start early and end late; leaving workers at a job site unsupervised is not the ideal situation, so most managers get to work first and leave last.
Responsibilities
Construction managers are responsible for overseeing the entire job site operation while handling outside forces. The job differs each day, so there is never a dull moment. It’s a job for an energetic, motivated, and caring manager looking to support a team of workers while getting work done efficiently and safely.
Here are the main responsibilities they have in a project:
- Communicate with workers: Make sure everyone knows the rules, what they need to do, and when to do it.
- Keep workers and passersby safe: Think about and prevent the safety hazards on a construction site.
- Negotiate project details: Deal with municipal officials, job clients, and safety inspectors, and develop plans that satisfy everyone’s needs.
- Supervise: Ensure workers are performing their duties safely and efficiently.
- Make decisions: This is not a job for the indecisive; you’ll make decisions about everything from which tool to use for which job, to safety precaution measures and injury procedures.
