March 8th, International Woman’s Day

March is Women’s History Month and was designated so by President Jimmy Carter in 1980 when he acknowledged that women were some of the first settlers who were on the Mayflower, who pushed away from the East Coast and eventually made it to the West Coast of this vast country.

But it took to the last amendment to the United States Constitution, the 27th, to finally put into law, Women’s Rights, “Equality of Rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” Because the amendment uses the word “shall” instead of will, the fight for equality is not over.

This coming Sunday, March 8th, is International Woman’s Day. In other countries, woman receive bouquets of beautiful flowers and gifts. Honor the women in your life to recognize what they mean to you and for their accomplishments.

Unfortunately, this coming Sunday is also the day we spring forward one hour on the old clock as the beginning of Daylight Savings time starts. That lost hour of sleep really takes a toll of most of us especially when it gets dark so early.

Speaking of Spring, hasn’t it arrived sooner this year? If you have itchy, scratchy eyes, running nose or congestion, it’s not the Virus, it’s all the life coming back into the world as trees are budding, azaleas beginning to bloom, green grass is pushing up through the dead leaves and grass. The Renewal of Life.

Remember if you have not gotten a flu shot, get one. And children under 2 years of age and adults over the age of 65 years old should have a pneumonia shot.
