Fishing Teams Compete at Lake Lanier Event

Members of the Jasper County High School Fishing Team participated in the Student Angler Federation Georgia State High School Fishing Championship that was held this past weekend on Lake Lanier in Gainesville.

The two-man teams were Chase Pitt and Colby Williams, and Evan Ferguson and Hunter Smith. The teams fished on Sunday for a five fish limit. There were a total of 82 teams at this event. The team of Pitt and Williams finished in 20th place with five fish weighing 11 lbs., 4 oz. Ferguson and Smith ended in 60th place with one fish weighing 2 lb., 8 oz.

The fishing on Saturday was difficult due to very windy conditions; however, the teams still had a promising practice day on Saturday, but the changing weather pattern and decreasing water level altered the bite. The winning team from Jackson County High School caught five fish weighing 17 lbs., 13 oz. The top eight teams advanced to the National High School Championship on the Mississippi River in LaCrosse, Wisconsin in June.

The JCHS Fishing Team would like to thank its sponsors: Tow Boat U.S. Captain Brandy Whitby, GA Farm Bureau, Maritsa’s Place, Berry’s Boat Dock, Larry’s 4-Way, Covington Ford, and Heartland Realty. Without their support, this experience would not have been possible.

Also taking part were Boat Captain Matt Williams and Captain Matt Tumlin, school sponsor.
