Will McElheney, a junior at Jasper County High School, has been selected to attend the Georgia Governor’s Honor Program this summer at Berry College.

Will was nominated by Jasper County High School Band Director Chris Savage and was selected in the area of music (trumpet). Will and three other JCHS students participated in a lengthy application and interview process, competing with over 3,200 students across the state.

The Governor’s Honors Program, known as GHP, is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school rising juniors and seniors. For four weeks, students will spend the morning in their major area of nomination, exploring topics not usually found in the regular high school classroom.

During the afternoons, students choose a minor from one of the other area of studies available and Will has selected computer science. The curriculum in all the areas is challenging and engaging.

Evenings are filled with seminars, concerts, and performances. Many of GHP past participants, including those from JCHS, regard it as one of the most life-changing events in their academic years.

Will is the son of Scott McElheney and Melissa Slocumb, both of Monticello.
