How to Puppy-Proof Your Home

Getting a new puppy is an exciting time for the whole family. There’s constant excitement and cuteness and never a dull moment. When you get a puppy, you get a new member of the family that you’ll love and care for as your own. One of the most important things to do before bringing your new fuzzy friend home is to puppy-proof your house. Check out this guide to learn how to puppy-proof your home.
Pick up and store all choking hazards
Puppies are like babies, and they’ll put anything and everything within their range of motion into their mouths. If you have anything that could be a choking hazard, that could harm teeth if bitten, or that may break apart easily, pick it up and get it to a safe location your puppy won’t have access to. This can not only save your puppy’s life, but also save you from buying six new television remotes during the course of two months. Assume the puppy will try to chew on any and everything you own for a while—especially during the teething stage.
Protect your furniture
If you have wooden furniture legs, the puppy may devour them. Puppies love a good wood snack. You can either wrap the legs in a form of fabric to which the pup has an aversion or spray them with a dog repellent spray such as lemon juice, which will naturally deter them from chewing. You may also want to research different ways to dog-proof furniture such as upholstered furniture, which the puppy can easily chew on and ruin.
Secure all trash cans
Puppies love to get into things, especially trash cans. If you currently have open trash cans or trash cans made of a lightweight material such as plastic, you may need to invest in hidden trash cans or stainless steel trash cans with lids that aren’t easily removed. This can prevent your puppy from getting into the garbage and eating things that could harm them or cause them to throw up all over your home.
