Things Every Young Driver Should Know

Driver’s education courses teach young drivers how to navigate the road safely, but there are still some odds and ends that aren’t covered in these courses. Of course, not everything can be taught ahead of time, and learning some things on the spot is a natural progression of learning to drive, but it never hurts to over-prepare. Here are a few things every young driver should know before they hit the open road on their own.

Keep Your Distance

Just because you aren’t touching the car in front of you, that doesn’t mean you’re driving at a safe distance. New drivers should learn the importance of keeping plenty of space between their car and other surrounding vehicles. This is a precautionary action to ensure you will have enough time to react and avoid a collision if the car in front of you must abruptly stop.

Don’t Skip Insurance

Owning a car is costly, and younger drivers who are more likely to be strapped for cash may feel inclined to save money by not purchasing insurance. While nobody plans to get into an accident, insurance will make the ramifications much less daunting when an accident does happen.

Think About Others

Young drivers should be aware that the choices they make when driving impact others just as much as they impact themselves. Using turn signals helps notify others behind you to slow down or lets other cars know when you are looking to change lanes. Similarly, slamming on your breaks can be uncomfortable for passengers and can cut down the reaction time of other cars around you.

Every action you take behind the wheel can positively or negatively impact others. Young drivers should remind themselves that some precautions are designed to keep everyone safe, not just themselves.

How To Handle Emergencies

One thing every young driver should know, but usually don’t until the moment strikes, is how to handle emergencies. From flat tires to being pulled over, these moments can be anxiety-inducing when handled for the first time. Young drivers should know what to do if they’re pulled over, what paperwork they’ll need to present, and who to call in case of an emergency.
