Thanksgiving 2020
Thanksgiving, the second most traveled time of the year, just watch the television news as you will see flocks of folks stuck in massive traffic jams on major roads or the yearly scenes at the airports stuck in airports, passengers sometimes resorting to sleeping on the floor when planes are delayed or canceled.
Quite a few Hallmark Channel movies are based on such holiday travel snafus, but, alas, the endings are usually happy ones with everyone finally getting along, eating a meal together or maybe having a wedding complete with snow and doves. Too bad real life is not so cheery.
This year, hey, it’s another world. Did you see a television commercial about a family who would normally be all ganged up around the bountiful table piled full of high calorie food groups, but this year they are in groups of 2-4 Facetiming at the dining table. It’s heartwarming to see the effort, but one question who brings all the food?
Normally, oh, yeah, normal, what an enigma! Usually, someone brings the dressing, someone brings the green bean casserole, someone brings the sweet potato casserole, on and on and the host of the meal is the one who supplies the turkey, ham, etc. and we all share in the meal.
2020 will be the year of the Take Out Thanksgiving or maybe the Drive By Thanksgiving. Start as you are reading Hello to plan your tactics. No need to suffer, a well organized and orchestrated Thanksgiving can still occur.
Three choices are cook everything yourself and sit down with your cellphone for Facetime with the rest of the family, it can be quite sweet. Move around the table showing your delicious meal, or make reservations to pick up a ready made Thanksgiving meal at say a local grocery store or restaurant, or do a Drive By.
Everyone has to agree to cook their normal contribution to the meal, but instead participants drive by the house and pick up their portion from the cooler on the front porch and take them home. Of course, the last choice is for locals only.
Could be done, well maybe.
Remember the three important things to prevent the spread of Covid—Mask up, Wash up, and Stay away from people. Next Thanksgiving maybe our preventative measures will just be a topic of conversation.
