JCHS Students Raise Their Voices In Sister Act Jr. on April 24-25

Monticello will soon be blessed by students from Jasper County High School’s presentation of a “divine” production: Sister Act Jr.

This rousing musical tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a high-spirited aspiring singer who witnesses a murder and is forced to enter the Queen of Angels convent under witness protection.

“‘Raise your voice’ is the beautiful, central message of this musical about a willful songstress who finds grace and fulfillment in the place she least expects it,” says Drew Cohen of Musical Theatre International. “It is only when Deloris takes sanctuary that she finds her place in the world; through the framework of this musical these students show how each of us can find our own unique way to express ourselves,” he adds.

JCHS presents Sister Act Jr. on Saturday evening, April 24, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday afternoon, April 25, at 3 p.m.in the JCHS school theater. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at JCHS or at the Chamber of Commerce. For more information, email Bobbi Sauls at bhsauls@jasper.k12.ga.us, or Lianna Nix at lnix@jasper.k12.ga.us.

Based on the hit film of the same name, Sister Act Jr. features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, and additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane.

The show opened originally in New York in 2009; a revised adaptation opened on Broadway in 2011 which received multiple Tony nominations, including “Best Musical.” The high school’s production promises to be well worth attending.

Though Deloris Van Cartier (played by senior Adrianna Wynn) is forced by her male counterpart Eddie (played by senior Luke Vaughn) into the convent under witness protection, she quickly finds her place in the women’s choir.

While Deloris does not share the faith and modesty of her fellow nuns, this newfound sisterhood offers her affirmation and friendship; Deloris, in turn, teaches each woman how to raise her voice in beautiful praise. The choir’s new sound proves a big draw, attracting new worshippers at church services, sorely-needed donations, and community attention.

In addition to its seniors, the cast includes juniors Kaitlyn Harvey, Jaylyn Wyatt, Gabriella Alvarado and Toren Nix; several freshmen: Hannah Tinney, Camara Campbell, Kristyn Hulen, Reagan Mask, Cameran Tuggle, Faith Cook, Sandra Cosby, Eli Hopkins, CJ Whitmire, Skye Eads, and Carlie Hall; and eighth grader Calleigh Stanley. Technical support is provided by Kristyn Hulen, Alora Adams, and Bethany Strength. The show is directed by Bobbi Sauls and Lianna Nix.
