School’s Back

Seems like kids were out of school for summer just the other day and now they’re back. Times have changed since folks my age were darkening the doorways of the hallowed halls. Back then we were out in May and didn’t return until after Labor Day. That seemed perfectly right.

Now, there are lots of vacation days sprinkled liberally through the school year. These vacations probably help students as well as teachers. Parents may not agree since they probably have to scramble to find students places to light for a few days or weeks.

By next week all of Jasper County schools will be back in session. As youngsters we really looked forward to our first week back when we could reconnect with friends that we did not see during the summer.

Then, they put the hammer down and we had to review our previous years’ work and then, seriously back to the books, the new books.

50 years ago, Vincent Damon Furnier became the stage persona, Alice Cooper, who wrote and sang his theme song, “School’s Out for Summer.” Well, school’s back.

Please help our schools and students. There are students who cannot afford to buy all those school supplies. Most every teacher buys hundreds of dollars in school supplies each year out of their pocket. Buy extra supplies if you can and send them with your student or take them by the schools.

Good luck this year, Jasper County students and teachers.
