A Trip To Buc-ee’s

Jimmy and I have traveled a bit this year. Nothing special, really, just taking a little time off and visiting relatives mostly.

Recently we went to Maryland to visit his brother’s family. While we were there his nephew celebrated both his retirement as a Capital Hill police officer and his 50th birthday. And, his mom gave him lots of items from Buc-ee’s.

They asked us if we stopped at Buc-ee’s and we said no, and explained we had been once and it was overwhelming to Jimmy.

See we visited the Buc-ee’s in south Georgia (Warner Robins area) last year. It was interesting. We didn’t need gas, but we had heard of the giant store and wanted to check it out.

Well, Jimmy and I parked and entered, and before we got very far into the store, Jimmy said he would wait in the car. Too many people, too much confusion; he saw no need to hang around.

I, on the other hand, went on to shop. I had heard of the brisket sandwiches, and I spied the fudge display, and I was interested. It happened to be shortly before my sister’s birthday, and when I shopped I found a gift that would have been nice for her. It was a decorative plaque that suited my sister.

However, it had two price tags…$29.99 and $49.99. So, I went to the register and asked. The girl paid no attention to my question, and scanned the price tag, and it was $49.99. I said no, thanks. And, it’s not that Jenny isn’t worth $50, but I just couldn’t pay $50 for something that clearly at some point had been sold for $30.

I may have bought some fudge or something small, I don’t remember, but we went on our merry way and said we’ve seen Buc-ee’s.

Fast forward to our trip to Maryland. We saw the Buc-ee’s on the way but saw no need to stop there. After all, we’ve been there, done that.

So, when his whole family was saying what a great place it is…large, spotless restrooms, cheap gas, and brisket sandwiches…we decided to try it again.

We actually scheduled our gas stop to get gas at Buc-ee’s, which for those who have not yet been to one, trust me, the location probably had 200 gas pumps. It also has charging stations for electric cars.

Well, this time we found that indeed the gas was cheaper than any around. But, beyond that we were still underwhelmed. It was not mealtime so we didn’t try the brisket sandwiches. I did get some fudge, which was nothing to write home about. And, we did take advantage of the nice restrooms.

I didn’t shop much, having a bad taste in my mouth still about the two-priced gift I did not buy last year.

So, if you’re traveling and looking for a place to stop, I highly recommend Buc-ee’s for a pit stop. However, if you’re in need of a gift, I don’t recommend it as the best place to shop.

I’ve heard lots of people brag on Buc-ee’s. I guess it’s like most everything…some good, some not so good. But, I would recommend the stop..at least once.
