Why Can’t I Wear White After Labor Day

Last chance for those white jeans and then gently fold them and put away until May 31st of next year. Just where did this malarkey originate?
Look it up, it seems the rich at the turn-of-the-century wanted to distinguish themselves from the want to be by not wearing white after Labor Day. This malarkey dribbled down and then it became a faux pas. Until…
“Vogue” magazine proclaimed it was now ok to wear white after Labor Day. Surely Labor Day has something to with it. Afterall, Labor Day does honor labor not the rich. Let them find their own day.
To get around the stigma just refer to wearing white after Labor Day as wearing “Winter White.” My grandmother passed down the stigma to us and said people who wore white were trying to be uppity. She also taught us what high cotton meant and it had nothing to do with cotton. To this day I hear some of her words and phrases.
Happy Labor Day and wear some white shoes.
