Student Makes Perfect Score

Kayla Rand, a freshman at Jasper County High School in Amy Scroggs’ Introduction to Business and Technology Class, recently made a perfect score of 1,000 on the Microsoft Word 365 Certification test.

This came just two weeks before Miss Rand passed the Microsoft Word 365 EXPERT certification test, according to Mrs. Scroggs. “In the 12 or so years I’ve been administering the Microsoft Office Specialist tests, I’ve never had a student make a perfect score on any of the tests,” Mrs. Scroggs explained.

“I’ve had students certify in both the basic and expert levels of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, which is an accomplishment in and of itself, but I’ve never had someone score the perfect 1000…until Kayla! I’m not sure who was more excited…her or me!”

Mrs. Scroggs offers all students who complete the Business & Technology pathway at JCHS the opportunity to become certified associates in Word, Word Expert, Excel, Excel Expert and PowerPoint. The last test serves as the end of pathway assessment for the state of Georgia.

Students completing the pathway can earn all five certifications over the three-year, three-course pathway. “Students who earn these industry credentials can then use them to get a job,” Mrs. Scroggs said.

“The certification assures employers that the student has the knowledge base in that software program to use the software effectively and productively. It’s a win-win for the student and for the employer.”

The Word and Word Expert certification tests are offered through the Intro to Business & Technology classes, which are taught by Mrs. Scroggs, Nash Bragg and Mrs. Mary Tumlin. Then if a student chooses to continue the pathway into the Business & Technology class taught by Mrs. Scroggs, the student could earn Excel and Excel Expert certifications. The final pathway class, Business Communications, affords a student the opportunity to certify in PowerPoint.

More than 100 eighth through twelfth grade students have earned Microsoft Specialist Certifications this school year, with many of those students earning several certifications. “We are so proud of these students for working diligently through the software lessons and practicing for these exams,” Mrs. Scroggs said.
