Summer To Do List

School went into summer break last week and I have been readying my summer to-do-list. Technically, it’s not summer until June 20th but any weeks I’m not dropping off, picking up, or attending some school function is summer to me.

On the top of my list is relaxing. Relaxing a bit from the hustle and bustle of driving extra miles in the early morning hours for drop off and timing the afternoon pickups just so. Twelve years I’ve been dropping off and picking up at five different schools with just one more year to go!

Jacob’s last day of middle school next year will truly be a celebration. Until then I’ll enjoy my two month hiatus which in reality won’t be eight weeks when I figure into two basketball camps, football camp, and robotics nationals but I’ll take it.

Needless to say, any relaxation I get from not having to drive as much might be negated from the stress of worrying about Robyn’s plentiful driving this summer. Her summer is shaping up to be only slightly less busy than her school year. Let’s just say she will be spending lots of time on I-20 to and from Atlanta. Between an on campus college experience week, six week teen leadership internship with Grady Health System, and the CDC Disease Detective Camp, she’ll be racking up some nice mileage on her car and my nerves.

Next on my list is some spring/summer/fall/ spring/summer cleaning. Meaning I haven’t deleted any extra or outdated or unwanted stuff from last spring…and it’s a lot now. Robyn usually lists our unwanted clothes and shoes worthy for sale on her Poshmark account but that has fallen by the way side. So we’ve racked up containers of outgrown apparel that I really wish would vanish. We donate a lot to Goodwill and others we think could use any of the items and it looks a lot like we will be donating more.

At three on the list is a refresh of wall paint. Jacob’s room could definitely use it, who knows what happens in his room, if only his walls could talk. My neighbor Barb and I decided we needed new wall paint a few months back as we both stared at our respective walls. She’s a real do it yourselfer (DIY) and she’s always up for a project, worth while or not. I ventured out the door last week to see Barb under the hood of her SUV adding some oil to the engine.

Last on my current to do list is another attempt to improve my green thumb skills. I love plants and flowers but they haven’t loved me in the past. It’s obviously more than just watering them and even talking nicely to them. Whatever the equation is, I haven’t gotten it right over the past few decades, so I’m rededicating myself to the task.

Maybe it’s me liking the most difficult plants to care for and not having enough patience. My mother was good at maintaining her plants, my dad was good at gardening and Lord knows I spent my youthful summers helping them both. My brother-in-law definitely has a green thumb, entering his home is like a trek through the rainforest.

I bought two new plants last week, I will keep you posted on their progress.

Hopefully it will be good news for them, the plants, and great things for whatever you’re planning to do this summer!
