Something To Do

The city of Monticello is presenting Street Eats & Classic Cruise-In this Saturday to give residents and visitors an opportunity to stay and play in their hometown.

Some people around here like to say there’s nothing to do. But there is! Always. Lately the city, Bridging Monticello, Thomas Persons Hall and the Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce have been presenting many activities. Some are well attended, others not so much.

For example, every Saturday from 8 am. to 2 p.m., the Market on the Square offers fresh produce and lots of handmade goods and other wares for those who come up town and check it out. You can stock up on canned goods for the winter when there’s not much fresh produce.

Best of all, you can visit in the great outdoors with other Jasperites and visitors who pass through on a Saturday morning. It’s a great thing that many people never take advantage of.

This week’s street eats and classic cruise in will offer food trucks and fun around the city. A bartender will be on hand to serve beer and wine local restaurants may offer to go coctails, food trucks will offer a variety of food and music will make you feel good. So it’s a good time to bring the family for a little fun with neighbors. In addition, there will be games available to play for those who like a little healthy competition.

The following weekend will be a good time for students to get school supplies as it’s time for the Back-to-School rally. And August will be busy with the beginning of school and all that goes with that.

On September 6, Mix Tape, a 90s cover band will perform at Thomas Persons Hall followed on September 28 with a return of the Vintage Vixens. This is just a sampling of things to do around her. The Garden Club meets monthly for those who have a green thumb and like to associate with others that enjoy plants and flowers. For meeting dates and times, contact Dianne Parker, 404-281-0562.

And, of course, the biggest tourist event of the year in Jasper County, the Deer Festival, will be here before you know it, on Saturday, Nov. 2.

In the meantime, MKR offers kart racing many Saturdays throughout the year. You can learn more about them on Facebook. The track is located just past the Jasper County Recreation Department off Hwy. 212. And speaking of the Recreation Department, there’s never a shortage of activities out there.

Currently there is some adult softball, and football, soccer and cheerleading gear up soon. Enrollment for that ends in early August, so don’t wait!

We frequently hear, or read on social media, there’s nothing to do here. We beg to differ. Our weekly community calendar lists official meetings (not much fun, but quite educational), church events and any events we are apprised of. We’d like to include your special event and look forward to you attending community events.

This doesn’t touch on the annual events that have already happened this year, such as the Shady Dale Rodeo, Jasper Jubilee, and so much more. Read in these pages, and learn about where you can find “something to do.”
