Snow, Peace & Quiet

Nothing like a good snow day to get some needed rest, and play.

As I watched the predicted weather reports come in early last week, I knew school would be cancelled even if the administration hadn’t fully decided. Last Tuesday, while at Jacob’s recreation basketball game Robyn got a notification that her high school’s Friday basketball activity would be postponed. Here we go!

So as Wednesday came, then Thursday, the call came cancelling school for the next day. I had ran my needed errands—you know buying the bread, juices, vittles for a good pot of chili, and mindless snack foods. I didn’t have to worry about candles, in case the power went, because I have a big backstock of those. I was curious to see just what Friday morning would bring.

About 3 a.m. Friday I awoke to sleet pellets hitting some metal outside. I hopped up to peek out the window, just pellets no snow yet. Jacob had fallen asleep on the sofa watching the Notre Dame/Penn State matchup—he didn’t see the ending. I didn’t bother him and went back to bed.

At 8 a.m. I arose and wandered toward the porch where to my surprise was a winter wonderland with the snow coming down in full effect. I opened the door wide and yelled to Jacob to look. He arose to seeing the snow come down and every stitch of grass covered outside.

“Omg, it’s snowing mom,” he screamed like a three year old. He asked could he go outside. I told him to put on some warm clothes and a jacket. He raced to his room, threw some sweat pants over his shorts and a hoodie. I told him he would need more but he flew out the door.

I went to alert Robyn, who looked out her window, said “nice” and went back to bed.

I made a cup of apple cider and went to watch Jacob play in the snow. It was an official snow day! No cars had been down the road and only a few people were out in the snow as far as I could see, and there was still power. I clicked on the tv, only to see the opposite effects on the West Coast. As I said a prayer for those caught in the wildfires, I thought about Mother Natures irony of having raging fires on one coast and snow and ice on the other. I was also glad Jimmy had made it into the ground in Plains after a long week before the snow began falling.

At some point, Jacob ran in asking if he had gloves. I told him yes but who knows where in his mess. No worries, he said, as he ran out again with socks on his hands. Lol. He came back in a little later to ask for a hat.

The undisturbed snow on the ground was beautiful but as the day went on and the snow turned to ice, it would be detrimental if trying to move about on unprepared roads, and I hadn’t seen any trucks distributing salt or brine. So we stayed put for nearly 72 hours—it was wonderful!

I made jello, the aforementioned chili (that Jacob ate most of before it was actually done), a blueberry cobbler, chicken alfredo, and fresh fruit smoothies. There was constant eating while I caught up on my tv shows I was behind on and started some new ones. It wasn’t the Carribean, like Kathy was enjoying, but boy was it grand!
