10 Compete at National History Day
On February 8, 10 students from Jasper County High School traveled to the University of Georgia Continuing Education Center in Athens to compete in the Northeast Region National History Day competition.
Students were charged with completing a research project. Presenters could choose to participate from one of five categories: exhibit, website, documentary, paper, or performance.
Entering the senior group exhibit category were Ben Wojdacz and Randolph Epps who presented “Sherman’s March to the Sea and its Impact on Monticello.” Also, Breanna Singleton and Isabella Lewis entered the category with their exhibit “Alice Paul.”
Four students entered the senior individual exhibit category. Cooper Selman presented his exhibit “The Cuban Missile Crisis”; Maiden Jordan presented her exhibit “From Suffrage to the White House”; Michael Lopez Lopez presented “Jim Crow”; and Jayden Wojcik presented his exhibit “A School Built Separate.”
Two students, Kayden Davis and Jazmin Maddox, competed in the senior group documentary category with their project “Slavery by Another Name: Georgia Peonage.”
Wojcik won second place in his category, while Davis and Maddox won third place in their category. All three students will compete at the state competition at LaGrange College on April 20. The top three projects from each category progress to the state level.
There are 10 regions submitting projects. If students win at the state level, they will progress to the national competition, competing against projects from all 50 states and beyond.
The national contest is at the University of Maryland June 8-12. In addition to participating in the competition, competitors will tour Washington, D.C.
The JCHS students were sponsored by their teacher, Bonnie Garvin.
