JCHS CTAE Members Visit Safari

More than 50 students and teachers from Jasper County High School recently visited the Georgia Safari Conservation Park in Madison to celebrate Career, Technical & Agricultural Education (CTAE) Month.

Jordana Pope Roberts, a Jasper County native who serves as the Educational Program Specialist at the Safari, coordinated the event with her mother, Mary Tumlin, who is the CTAE Director for Jasper County.

Members of the different JCHS Career & Technical Student Organizations including FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, HOSA and TSA as well as CTAE students were eligible to participate in the field trip.

The day consisted of spending time with eight of the 50 employees to hear about their specific jobs at the Safari including training, education and skills needed for that position as well as their day-to-day duties and likes/dislikes of the jobs.

The group then split for a guided tour of the 530 acre safari and a chance to see and learn about the exotic animals there which included an American Bison, Addax, Ankole-Watusi, Argentine Black and White Tegu, Asian Water Buffalo, Common Eland, Common Ostrich, Emu, Grant’s Zebra, Greater Kudu, Reticulated Giraffe, Roan Antelope, Southern White Rhinocerous, and Speckled Kingsnake.

The group also had the opportunity to tour one of the safari tents available for overnight lodging. Other overnight adventures might include the honeymoon hideaway and the giraffe suite.

The field trip was organized by Mrs. Tumlin and CTAE Department Chair Amy Scroggs who coordinated with the Safari staff and the participating students and parents. In addition to Mrs. Tumlin and Mrs. Scroggs, other CTAE teachers who participated in the event were Nash Bragg, Karen Dotson, Casey Elias, Dr. Tyson Harty, Matt Hyde, Johnnie Sue Moore and Nancy Williams.
