FBI Releases 2024 Internet Crime Report

The FBI just released the 2024 Internet Crime Report.

Georgia is in the top 10 states that lost the most amount to frauds and scams last year and reports received from senior citizens (aged 60+) increased 70 percent.

Here in Jasper County, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) have also seen that significant rise in fraud reports received in 2024 and it does not seem to be slowing down this year either. Prevention is key and it begins with you. Take some basic steps today to help protest yourself from the growing number of frauds and scams out there.

• Monitor Your Accounts: check your accounts often and immediately report any suspicious activity. Also regularly change your passwords. Choose passwords that do not include whole words and make a combination of letters, symbols and numbers.

•Never give out personal information: a helpful way to verify who you are speaking with is for you to call them directly. If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be with a bank or other service, it is okay to get their information and then hang up. Verify the phone number they called from and then call them directly yourself.

•Stay up-to-date on the current scams: continually educate yourself on how to protect against fraud, and when in doubt, call us for help before taking any action. It is okay to err on the side of caution!
