Lady ‘Canes Play for Region Title

The Lady ‘Canes softball team hosts Crawford Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m. for the region championship game.

The Lady ‘Canes took both games of a doublehader against Putnam Thursday. The ladies took the first one handily, 9-0, and also beat the War Eagles in the second game, 8-2.

The Lady ’Canes, after earning a bye for the first round of the play-offs by winning the Region 4AA Championship, took the field at home October 3, for a double-header versus Putnam, the winner of the Putnam County and Taylor County series.

It was also Senior Night, and the Lady Seniors were honored at the break between the two games. Seniors include Tierra Whitlock, Janee Chapman, Alkeili Ross, Beth Hart, Allyric Usher, Kaitlan Needham and Taylor Garrett.

In action during the last week the Hurricane ladies defeated Eastside 9-1, but dropped a game to Strong Rock 4-2 in extra innings.

Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach Chris Jenkins said, “In the Strong Rock game we needed to have done a better job of adjusting earlier in the game to slower pitching. At this point in the season it should not take six innings for us to get our timing down and get back to hitting line drives.

“However, in the Eastside game we played the most complete game we’ve played all season. With the exception of one base-running mistake, we played flawless in every aspect, and this was against a big-time program.”

The Ladies traveled to Forsyth Tuesday, and defeated Mary Persons 7-1 for their final regular season game. It was a long seven innings and Garrett was on the mound holding MP to only one run.

Leading the hitting were Chapman and Shianne Reed with two hits apiece, followed by Needham with one hit. Morgan Studdard, Reed and Hart each earned an RBI.
