Middle School ‘Canes Lose

The Monticello Middle School Hurricane football team traveled to Putman County last Wednesday, and fell 30-6 in a game marked by turnovers.

After fumbling the opening kickoff on their own 19 yard line, the Hurricanes went immediately on the defensive. Four plays later the Eagles scored their first touchdown. It would be midway through the fourth quarter before the Canes’ defense would give up another score.

The only other score for the Eagles in the first half was given up by the special teams on a kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter.

The first half for the Hurricane’s offense consisted of two long drives that produced no points. The Hurricanes began the half with a 13-play drive that took them down to the Eagle’s one yard line.

Passes from Braden Lynch of 10 and 12 yards to Ashton Bonner and one pass for 27 yards to De’Ivion Lawrence brought the Canes to the 9 yard line before a run up the middle by Malik Crawford for 8 yards put the ball on the 1. The fumbled handoff that followed left the Hurricanes with no points and the Eagles with the ball.

The Hurricane’s second drive of the half was also a multi-play drive that stalled. After 12 plays, nine of which were running plays totaling 47 yards, the offense failed to convert on a 4th down and turned the ball back over to the Eagles.

The only score for the Hurricanes in the first half was an interception by Ashton Bonner returned 33 yards for a touchdown.

In the second half, the Hurricane’s defense continued to play strong and held the Eagles scoreless until their last two possessions of the game late in the 4th quarter. The Hurricane offense was unable to mount any successful scoring drives of their own, ending the game with a victory for the Eagles.

The Middle School Hurricanes were to play Loganville Middle School yesterday, Sept. 25, and will be hosting Greene County on October 2.
