Lady Canes Secure Spot in State Playoff
The Bleckley County Lady Royals didn’t stand a chance last Thursday, Sept. 12, as the Lady ‘Canes captured a blowout 8-0 win in five innings at home.
The win secured the team a berth in the state play-off’s for the ninth season in a row.
Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach Chris Jenkins said, “Pitching and defense were outstanding against Bleckley.
Kaitlan Needham saved a couple of runs with a diving catch in the third inning. The offense was led by Morgan Studdard and Destiny Glawson who hit home runs, and Taylor Garrett who added three hits.”
Prior to the above game, on Wednesday, Sept. 11, the ladies refused to relinquish the lead after grabbing it early against Salem, recording a 9-1 victory.
The Lady ‘Canes did suffer a small letdown last weekend by going 1-3 in the Morgan County tournament.
Coach Jenkins said, “I would love to blame our Friday and Saturday performances on fatigue, due to having played seven games in five days, but you have to show up ready to play and compete no matter how you feel. So that should be no excuse. We just weren’t mentally ready and it showed. They were all close games, but should have all gone in the win category. Hopefully we learned a valuable lesson that will help us in October.”
The team was scheduled to play Putman in Eatonton Tuesday, too late to report the results in this edition.
They are also scheduled to host the Deer Capital Classic tournament which was to start yesterday, Sept. 18, and will continue through this Saturday, Sept. 21.
Next Monday, Sept. 23, the young ladies are scheduled to play Morgan at home, and on Wednesday, Sept. 25, to travel to Macon to take on Howard.
