MS ‘Canes Win

The Monticello Middle School Hurricane football team began its 2013 season with a 24-12 win, at home over Social Circle.

In the first quarter, Social Circle struck first scoring on its first play from scrimmage with a 60 yard touchdown run.

The Middle School ’Canes defense then held the Redskins scoreless the remainder of the first half, but were unable to post a score themselves, ending the half with Social Circle leading 6-0.

The ’Canes came back in the second half with two unanswered scores. Jay Driskell started the scoring with a 61 yard touchdown run, followed later by a 74 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Braden Lynch to Ashton Bonner.

The Redskins rebounded to tie the score with a 34 yard halfback pass.

With less than three minutes to go in the game, the Hurricanes started their drive on their own 48 and marched down the field for the go ahead score. During that drive, Driskell had an 11 yard run and a 20 yard run before Lynch and Bonner connected for the second time with a 27 yard touchdown reception.

The Redskins had little time left on the clock to mount a comeback, and the game ended with a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown by Driskell with the clock running out.

The Middle School Hurricanes were scheduled to host the Morgan County Bulldogs yesterday, with scores too late to report here. They will then travel to face Putnam, Wednesday, Sept. 18.
