It’s Football Time

Fall is in the air…it must be because football has begun.
The Piedmont Academy Cougars had their first contest of the season last Friday, and it was a close one…so close it ended in a tie (another photo, full story, see page 13).
The Monticello Hurricanes and most other high school teams across the state get going this weekend, as do the college teams. Professional football teams are set to finish off their pre-season today, Aug. 29, and be ready for action on September 8.

And, if football is beginning, then so must The Monticello News annual football contest. The News and 14 sponsors (this week) plan 15 weeks of fun for the serious, and not so serious, football fan. That’s right, the football contest begins this week.
Players will find 15 games listed on page 11 of today’s paper. Just pick the winner of each of the games listed and fill in the entry form, or write it on a plain piece of paper, and submit it to The News office—in person, by fax, or courier—however you can get it here, 237 West Washington Street, by 5 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 30.
Be sure to fill in the tie-breaker box. In case two or more people have the same number of correct picks, the tie-breaker is used to select the winner. The tie-breaker is the total number of points the player thinks will be scored in the first game listed, marked with an asterisk.
Those correctly guessing the winner in 12 or more games listed will be named to the honor roll. At the end of the season, one lucky player will be selected from the honor roll by random drawing to win four premier tickets to the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta.
Tomorrow, Aug. 30, the ‘Canes will host Morgan County at Rose Bowl field while the Cougars travel to Dublin.
So, as you get ready for the first weekend of football, don’t forget to submit your entry into the contest first—by 5 p.m. Friday—or you will be left out.
