Lady Cougars See Plenty of Action

The Piedmont Academy softball team gained plenty of game experience last week during the early portion of the 2013 season.

Coach Danny Camp’s team hosted a tournament and played six games during a three-day stretch from Thursday until Saturday, including two contests hosted by Briarwood.

After falling to Flint River 8-5 in eight innings in its tournament opener, Piedmont reeled off five wins in a row and is now 5-3 for the season. The Lady Cougars recorded victories against John Milledge (6-5), Gatewood (5-1), Briarwood (16-9), Edmund Burke (13-1) and Briarwood again (11-4.) The final two games for the Lady Cougars were played at Briarwood.

“It was a marathon three days, but we benefited from it,” Camp said. “We gained a lot of playing experience that will benefit us down the road. We competed against some quality opposition.”

In the tournament opener for Piedmont against Flint River, O’Neil Sealy was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Emily Hammonds, Taylor Swart, Morgan Tillman, Haley Tyler and Remington Marsh all scored runs.

In the win against John Milledge, Hammonds was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Cheyenne Galloway was 3-for-4 with a run scored while Amelia Dodson and Anna Jones both had hits. Marsh drove in one run.

Against rival Gatewood, Sealy and Hammonds both had hits while Hammonds scored two runs. Galloway was 1-for-3 with an RBI, walk and two runs scored. Dodson was 1-for-4 with a run and Marsh was 1-for-1.

There was plenty of offense in the win against Briarwood Friday. The team combined for 14 hits, including three for extra bases. Sealy was a perfect 4-for-4 with a run and seven RBI. Matti Smith was 1-for-3 with a run while Tyler was 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs. MaKennah Holifield was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jones was 1-for-2 with a double.

In Saturday’s win against Edmund Burke, Jones had a three-run homer while Hammonds connected for an RBI double. Sealy earned the win and did not allow an earned run while scattering four hits and no walks while striking out three in six innings of work.

Hammonds and Smith both drove in runs. Hammonds finished 3-for-4 with two runs. Galloway also scored two runs while Marsh was 1-for-1 with a run scored.

Jones continued her torrid pace at the plate against Briarwood Saturday with a three-run triple. Martin earned the win with a strikeout and no walks.

Swart was 2-for-4 in the win with a run and RBI while Tillman was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Last Wednesday’s game against Mt. de Sales was rained out.

Piedmont will host Loganville Christian Academy this Saturday, Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. followed by Greater Gwinnett at 4 p.m. The Middle School Lady Cougars will play Loganville Christian Academy Saturday at 10 and 11:30 a.m., also at home.
