Lady ‘Canes Place Second in 12 Team Tournament

The Lady Canes’ started their season by taking second place in the Diamond Classic Tournament in Griffin last weekend.

Taylor Garrett was on the mound in the first game and shut out Eagle’s Landing 9-0, allowing only four hits and one walk.

Offensively, Destiny Glawson had a home run and Janee Chapman went three-for-three at the plate.

In the second game Madison Reese pitched a complete game shutout, defeating a good hitting Luella team 4-0, by working ahead in the count and throwing strikes, behind an outstanding defense including outfielders Chapman, Kaitlan Needham, Alkeli Ross and Shianne Reed.

Reese picked up her second win of the tournament in a 9-6 defeat of Jackson, while Cassidy Brown, Allyric Usher and Baylee Keesee led the offense.

The team lost 9-8 to Eastside in the tournament championship game after the tying and winning runs were scored on a freak passed-ball play.

Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach Chris Jenkins said, “It was disappointing to lose because we fought back from a 7-2 deficit to take the lead going into the seventh inning. Samantha Johnson and Heather Anderson both had good offensive games.

“In all it was a solid start to the season.  It was nice to see Taylor get back on track in the pitching circle.  She had a tough time finding the strike zone in a couple of games over the summer.  We hit the ball well at times, we just need to be more consistent in our approach.”

The team was scheduled to travel to Locust Grove yesterday, Aug. 14, too late to report the results in this edition.

They are scheduled for their home opener today, August 15, versus Howard at 5 p.m. at the softball field located off Post Road north of the middle school, behind the tennis courts.
