30th Annual Shady Dale Rodeo Is Huge Success

The 30th annual Shady Dale rodeo was a huge success by all accounts, with the weather cooperating, and lots of spectators and competitors both nights.
The Shady Dale Round-Up Festival on Saturday and the parade that afternoon were also lots of fun for families.
More than $26,000 was paid out to winners in the event sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association. Southern Rodeo Company provided the stock.
Shady Dale Rodeo sponsors include Hooper Trailer Sales of Monticello for team roping; Pennington Seed, Inc. of Madison, sponsor of bareback riding; Alcovy Taxidermy, sponsor of saddle bronc riding; Ginn Motor Company, sponsor of steer wrestling; Tractor Supply Co., barrel racing, and Hays Tractor & Equipment, Inc., bull riding.

Local competitors included Colt Kelly and Keith Cagle of Monticello in the team roping event Friday night.
Also, Cassie Thompson, Blake Jones, Hayden Cagle, Casey Elias and Mac Buffer, all of Monticello, along with Ashley Jones of Mansfield competed in the barrel racing Friday night. On Saturday night, Amber Matkovich of Mansfield was among the barrel racers.
However the winner of the barrel racing was Katie Hulsey of Haleyville, Ala., with a time of 15.189. She took home $1,208 for her win. Right behind her was Jessi Proctor with a time of 15.325, who won $1,051, then Shawna Bourne, with a 15.352, taking home
893.
Also placing were Jessica Gilbert with a time of 15.376, and prize money of $735; Terri Alexander, with a time of 15.417, $778; Taylor Digh, 15.466, $420; Nancy Garrison, 5.471, $263, and Karla Dagenhart, 15.533, $105.
The big winner in the bull riding was Levi Whitlock who took home $1,881 for his efforts with a score of 85.5. Second place went to Peyton Stewart with a score of 84, and he took home $1,129. Third place went to Rowdy Rice, who scored an 82, and took home $753.
Tanner Phipps of Dalton was the winner of the bareback bronc riding, scoring a 75.5, and earning $1,012. Zaine Seales and James Hughes each scored 75, and earned $506 each.
Shane Proctor scored an 81 in the saddle bronc riding, earning him $1,012. Second place went to Eddie Parlier with a 73, $607, and Bud Humphries, 69, $405.
Jacob Dagenhart won the tie-down roping event with a time of 8.5, collecting $971 for his efforts. Second place went to Tim Pharr, with a time of 9.0, winning him $804. Thomas Linton was third with a 9.6, $636, Allen Livengood, 10.4, $469, Igor Fotlyn, 10.7, $301, and Will Charping, 11.0, $167.
Clint Thomas of Ranger, Ga., won the steer-wrestling event with a time of 5.0, taking home $875. Second place went to Jacob Raburn, with a time of 6.1, for $724. Third place belonged to Jacob Dagenhart, 6.6, $573; Joe Cook was fourth with a time of 6.7, for $469, followed by Walt Sherry, 6.8, $272, and Justin Raburn, 7.0, $151.
Winning the team roping event was Casey Hilley and Mark Gentry with a time of 5.1 seconds, taking home $954 each. Placing second were Will Clark and Sam Smith with a time of 5.4 for $789 each, followed by Jason Tucker and Mark Gentry with a 5.9 for $625 each. Quinton Parchman and Dalton Totty placed fourth with a time of 6.2, earning $460 each; Will Clark and Josh Clayton succeeded in 6.4 seconds to ear $296 each, and Jaob Dagenhart and Dalton Totty scored a 6.6 earning $164 each.
The Thornton Family was the specialty act that wowed the crowd, and David Sharp was arena announcer.
Tony McKay and Ted Dunn were judges, and timers were Tammy Holladay and Jennifer Reynolds. Robin Brooks and Joe Don Griffin were the pick-up men. Bryan McElwee and Shane Escoe were bull fighters, and Mike Wentworth was the barrelman.
All proceeds from the rodeo support Masonic charities, here and elsewhere. Jasper Lodge No. 50 and Walton Lodge No. 200 each give college scholarships to area youth. Masonic charities include youth homes, hospitals, and other child-centered charities.
