Cougars Remain in Contention for Region Title

With a region title still on the line, the Piedmont Academy baseball team held on for a 7-5 home win against Griffin Christian Tuesday afternoon.
The win improved the Cougars to 20-5 overall, but more importantly, keep them on pace with Arlington for the Region 4-AA title. Both teams have only one region loss and split the season series.
Tuesday’s win improved Piedmont to 12-1 against region foes.
The Cougars jumped out to a 6-1 lead Tuesday, but then saw Griffin Christian score one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to climb back in the contest. Piedmont scored another run in the bottom of the sixth and then held Griffin Christian to just one run in the top of the seventh for the victory.

“We may have relaxed a little after taking an early lead,” coach Danny Camp said. “I also made a couple of decisions which probably hurt us. The main thing is we got the win and are still in contention for the region championship.”
Mac Brittain went the distance with six strikeouts Tuesday. Only two of his runs were earned.
Logan Partenza went 3-for-4 with two runs while Josh Williams was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Zach Beggs was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Prior to Tuesday, the Diamond Cougars defeated Gatewood 5-3 Saturday in a home non-region contest.
Luke Andrews, Williams and Beggs helped lead the offense while Andrews, Malcom Tyler and Brittain all saw pitching duty.
The Cougars scored one run in the first and three more in the third. With the game tied at 3, Piedmont pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the fifth.
Last Friday, the Cougars defeated region foe LaGrange 4-3 in a home contest. Beggs earned the win going all seven innings allowing just six hits while striking out seven.
Beggs was also 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs. Partenza, Andrews, Brittain, and Tyler all added a hit. The winning run was scored the bottom of the sixth inning.
Piedmont will close out the regular season Friday at Flint River before beginning play in the state playoffs May 10.
If Arlington and Piedmont both win their final regions games, there will be a one-game playoff to determine the 4-AA champion. The game would likely be played Monday, Camp said, at a neutral location.
